Radon detection

What is radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas emanating from the soil that is invisible, odorless and tasteless, and derives from the biodegradation of uranium. While radio is harmless outdoors, when it infiltrates your house and exceeds a concentration of 200 becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m³). it is extremely dangerous to your health.

Health hazards

Data from the Quebec Lung Association and Health Canada show that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Quebec. What's more, children are more at risk than are adults. Radon is present in most homes and gets drawn indoors by the pressure differential with the outside air. The level of danger for the health of the occupants of a home increases with:

  • Concentration levels
  • Duration of exposure
  • Smoking

Infiltration methods

Radon infiltrates through any opening that comes in contact with the ground:

  • Foundational cracks
  • Crawl space
  • Joints between slab and exterior wall
  • Drain pipes or other fittings
  • Crumbling mortar
  • Exterior wall cavities
  • Sump pumps
  • Windows
  • Etc.

How to measure radon levels in your home

Since radon is undetectable, carrying out the appropriate test and going over the mitigation solutions that are best suited to your situation with an expert, is essential.

Long-term test – 3 months

Radon concentrations can vary from one day to the next. For this reason, opting for long-term testing to obtain a reliable and accurate result is crucial. Testing is carried out between October and May, when gas concentrations are at their highest.

Rapid test – 2 to 7 days.
Our rapid test provides preliminary data only. Rapid testing may be required for your radon mitigation monitoring program, or as part of your residential, commercial or industrial real estate transactions. In the second case, rapid results may need to be confirmed by a long-term test.
